About the Leonberger

Strong and elegant in it's precense, Intelligent, brave, full of love, gentle and easy going. A dog that gets along with any other animal and human, a family dog and lifelong companion.

As a puppy and juvenile a leonberger can be quit a handfull and be up to all sorts of mischievments, as most puppies do. During that time they love to chew on things and dig in the yard etc... However in my experience that settles as they grow out of their juvenile stage.  As any other dog they need training so they learn how to have healthy indoor and outdoor boundaries.

Good to know:

  • A large sized dog that sheds alot twice a year. The fur is easy to clean from clothing and floors as dust bunnies.
  • Rules must be in place early on and they need to be well socialised for healthy in and outdoor behaviour.
  • They are non barkers, but they will alarm if a stranger come to the house.
  • They need proper grooming at least once a week. A good brush through their entire coat will also give you a chance to detect any changes to their skin and/or paws. Brushing your leonberger regularly will also prevent knots etc to build up and increase the shine to their coat.  A lovely way to interact and bond with your friend.
  • There are more costs involved caring for a larger sized dog than a smaller sized one.
  • They want to be part of everything you do.
  • They need daily exersise.

A healthy dog is a happy dog
